एक कदम पीछेः हजारों मील पीछे

मोदी के परम मित्र अम्बानी के अस्पताल का उद्घाटन करते समय प्रधानमंत्री नरेन्द्र भाई मोदी ने अचानक दीनानाथ बत्रा की पुस्तक के पन्ने खोलते हुए बताया कि इस पुस्तक में प्राचीन भारतीय इतिहास को बताया गया है और उस समय के चिकित्सा विज्ञान की महान उपलब्धियों जिक्र है और आह्वान किया कि आज के डॉक्टरों को ‘उन ऊँचाइयों को छूना होगा। उन्होने कह कि “हम गणेशजी की पूजा करते हैं। कोई प्लास्टिक सर्जन होगा उस जमाने में जिसने मनुष्य के शरीर पर हाथी का सर रख करके प्लास्टिक सर्जरी का प्रारम्भ किया होगा।“ व “मेडिकल साईंस की दुनिया में हम गर्व कर सकते हैं कि हमारा देश किसी समय में क्या था। महाभारत में कर्ण की कथा, हम सब कर्ण के विषय में महाभारत में पढ़ते हैं। लेकिन कभी हम थोड़ा सा और सोचना शुरु करें तो ध्यान में आयगा कि महाभारत का कहना है कि कर्ण माँ की गोद से पैदा नहीं हुआ था। इसका मतलब है कि उस समय जेनेटिक साइंस मौजूद था। तभी तो कर्ण माँ की गोद के बिना, उसका जन्म हुआ था।“

मोदी द्वारा की गयी ये बांते अजूबा नहीं हैं बल्कि राष्टीय स्वयंसेवक संघ निदेशित वर्तमान सरकार द्वारा इतिहास, विज्ञान, प्रतीकों व तर्कबुद्धि की परिभाषा व तरीकों को बदलने की कोशिशों का ही एक भाग है। राष्टीय स्वयंसेवक संघ नीत इस सरकार द्वारा राष्टीय स्वयंसेवक संघ के पूरे अजेण्डा को लागू करने की साजिश का ही यह हिस्सा है। वे चाहते हैं कि हिन्दू अथवा आर्य श्रेष्ठता को स्थापित किया जाय। और इसे वे अपनी योग्यता बढ़ाकर नहीं, बल्कि बाकी लोगों को आतंकित करके कि या तो हमारी बात मानो या भाग जाओ और दूसरे लोगो के दिमागो को बदल कर करना चाहते हैं। इस लेख में हम दूसरी बात पर मुख्य चर्चा करेंगे।

आज सभी चीजों पर चौतरफा हमला हो रहा है। चाहे वह इतिहास हो, विज्ञान हो, प्रतीक हों या सोचने का नजरिया। इतिहास को मिथक बनाया जा रहा है और मिथक को इतिहास, विज्ञान झुठला कर को रुढ़ियों से बदला जा रहा है और रुढ़िवाद को ही विज्ञान बनाया जा रहा है, प्रतीकों को बदला जा रहा है अथवा उनके मायने ही बदल दिये जा रहे हैं। यह बेहद खतरनाक है। खतरनाक इसलिये कि क्योंकि इससे छात्र-नौजवनों की समझदारी प्रभावित होगी, खतरनाक इसलिये क्योंकि इससे वैज्ञानिक सोच और तर्कशीलता कुंद होगी (ऐसे ही ये बहुत नहीं है), खतरनाक इसलिये क्योंकि इससे इतिहास का अर्थ व व्याख्या ही बदल जाएगी, खतरनाक इसलिये क्योंकि ये गद्दारों को राष्ट्रीय नायक स्थापित करेगा और असली नायकों को भुला देगा।

यही वजह है कि दीनानाथ बत्रा आज शिक्षा नीति निर्धारक बन पहुँचे हैं और वाई॰एस॰  राव भारतीय इतिहास अनुसंधान परिषद (इण्डियन कॉन्सिल ऑफ हिस्टोरिकल रिसर्च –आइ॰सी॰एच॰आर॰) के अध्यक्ष बनाये गये हैं। हाँलाकि वाई॰एस॰  राव अपने को राष्टीय स्वयंसेवक संघ का सदस्य नहीं मानते हैं पर इनके विचार एक दम वैसे ही हैं। बत्रा पंजाब के कस्बे डेरा बस्सी और बाद में हरियाणा में हेड मास्टर रह चुके हैं। वे राष्टीय स्वयंसेवक संघ के शिक्षा प्रभाग विद्या भारती के मुख्य कार्यकर्ता हैं। इनका अपने विचारों को (अर्थात संघ के विचारो को) थोपने और झोंकने का लम्बा इतिहास रहा है। अगर इनके विचार देखें जाये तो वे न केवल दूसरी सभ्यतायों के लिये बेहद अनादरपूर्ण हैं बल्कि कुछ तो इतने मूर्खतापूर्ण हैं कि उनपर बोलने के लिये शब्द ही नहीं मिलते। उनकी लिखी पुस्तकें तो गुजरात में पहले से ही पढ़ाई जा रही हैं और उन पर गुजरात के तत्कालीन मुख्यमंत्री नरेन्द्र मोदी का प्राक्कथन अंकित है। उनकी किताबें प्राचीन हिन्दु ग्रंथों का उल्लेख करती हैं और उनमें वर्णित घटनयो व किस्सो को सत्य मान कर उन कल्पनायों को स्वयंसिद्ध तथ्य मानती हैं।

उदाहरण बहुतेरे हैं। यहां कुछ का उल्लेख करेते हैं। वो बताते हैं निःसंतान राज परिवार को गौपूजा से संतान प्राप्त हुई थी अतः गौसेवा करने से नंपुसकता का समाधान हो सकता है। भगवान राम ने पुष्पक विमान उड़ाया था अतः निश्चय ही उस समय हवाई जहाज मौजूद था। ग्रंथों में दो तरह के रथों का जिक्र है – अश्व रथ तथा अनश्व रथ। अश्व रथ को घोड़ा खींचता था, तो अनश्व रथ मोटर कार ही होगें। वो इस बात पर भी सोचने को तैयार नहीं हैं कि वो उड़ते किस ईंधन से होंगे? उस समय पेट्रोल आदि तो था नहीं, एक मात्र ज्वलनशील पदार्थ घी होता था। वो ये भी नहीं बताते कि क्यों उसे बनाने की विधि, उसका कोई वर्णन कहीं नही मिलता। हमें अतिप्राचीन सभ्यता के अवषेश मिले हैं, पत्थर के टुकड़े, कोई अंश आदि खुदाइ में निकले हैं, इनका कोई प्रमाण क्यों नहीं मिलता? जानेमाने हिंदी व्यंगकार हरिशंकर परसाई कहते हैं कि अच्छी बात है कि विमान बना लिया, साईकिल क्यों नहीं बनाई । बत्रा साहब भूल जातें हैं कि अतिप्राचीन काल से ही मनुष्य ने उड़ने की कल्पना की है, वह उसकी दिली इच्छाओं मे रहा है और उसी के चलते उसने ये कल्पनायें की हैं। और क्योंकि ये बहुत विशिष्ट व कल्पनिक गुण हैं, अतः इन्हे देवताओं को ही दिया गया है, तकि साधारण मनुष्य को दिखाना पड़े। और एसी कल्पनायें तो सभी सभ्यतायों में रहीं हैं। दुनिया के हर कोने में मनुष्य ने उड़ने का सपना देखा है, कोशिशें की हैं, कहानियां गढ़ीं हैं। इसका यह मतलब तो नहीं कि वे सब सच हैं।

महाभारत का ही जिक्र करते हुये वो कहतें हैं कि उस समय अति विकसित स्टेम सेल आधारित तकनीक रही होगी क्योंकि महाभारत में तो माँ की कोख से बाहर जन्म का वर्णन है जैसे कौरवों का जन्म। पर वो ये बताने में अक्षम हैं कि इन दो चार घटानायों के अतिरिक्त ये ‘अतिविकसित’ तकनीकों का इस्तेमाल क्यों नहीं किया गया। शिवजी ने गणेश के सिर पर हाथी का सिर लगा दिया अतः उस समय प्लास्टिक सर्जरी रही ही होगी। वे इस पर विचार नहीं करते कि एक तो इसे करने के लिये प्लास्टिक सर्जरी से भी अधिक की दरकार है। दूसरे अगर प्लास्टिक सर्जरी संभव ही थी तो वापस उसी का सिर क्यों नहीं? और यदि हाथी का सिर लगा है तो बुद्धि भी तो हाथी की ही होगी। अन्य जगह भी ऐसी ही कल्पनायें हैं, यूनानी देवता घोड़े का सिर लिये हैं फिर उड़ने वाला घोड़ा (पिगासस), माने कि दुनिया में सभी जगह प्लस्टिक सर्जरी मौजूद थी!

अन्य दिल्चस्प बाट यह है कि उनके पास प्लास्टिक सर्जरी तो थी पर अन्य प्रकार की नहीं, वरना दुर्योधन आदि को मरना नहीं पड़्ता (कूल्हे की हड्डी बदलने की सर्जरी से उसका बचना संभव था)। संजय ने धृतराष्ट्र को दूर से ही देख महाभारत का हाल सुनाया था अतः टीवी था, पर शायद बहुत ही कम लोगों के लिये, अन्यथा गुरु द्रोण देख सकते थे कि कौन सा अश्वत्थामा मारा गया। विमान थे पर फिर भी लंका पर चढ़ाई के लिये पुल बनाना पड़ा। हवाई हमला क्यों नहीं? अगर ध्यान से देखें तो शायद ये विमान आज से भी अधिक विकसित थे, क्योंकि न तो इन्हें उड़ने से पहले दौड़ने के लिये रनवे चाहिये था, न ही हेलिकोप्टर की तरह पंख। अन्य पहलू है कि ये लोग किसी भी विदेशी मूल की चीजों को निम्न श्रेणी का समझते हैं। ये अफ्रीकियों का मखौल उड़ाते हैं, उन्हे नीग्रो या हब्शी कह कर पुकारते हैं जबकि इस शब्द को दुनिया भर में प्रतिबन्धित किया गया है क्योंकि यह गुलामी और पराधीनता का द्योतक है। और ऐसा बार बार करते हैं, यहां तक कि वे ये भी कहते हैं कि इनका उच्चारण भैंस के रंभाने जैसा होता है। वो बताते हैं कि एक बार भगवान रोटी बना रहे थे, पहली रोटी कम सिकी, उससे अंग्रेज बने, दूसरी जल गयी उससे अफ्रीकी आये, तीसरी ठीक सिकी जिससे भारतीय उत्पन्न हुये! वे एक घटना का जिक्र करते हुए बताते हुए बताते हैं कि एक बार स्वामी विवेकानन्द भारतीयता पर भाषण दे रहे थे, उन्होने कहा कि हमें केवल भारतीय वस्तुयें व वस्त्र ही धारण करनी चाहियें, किसी ने भीड़ से कहा कि आपके जूते तो विदेशी हैं तो विवेकानन्द ने कहा कि हाँ, विदेशी सामान कि यही जगह है।

वे वृहद अखण्ड भारत की बात भी करते हैं जिसमें म्यान्मार, अफग़ानिस्तान, तिब्बत आदि भी शामिल हैं, और आह्वान किया है कि इस महानता को पुनः प्राप्त किया जाना चाहिये। इतिहास के किस कालखण्ड में ऐसा था वे ये विद्वान ही जानते होगें।

दरअसल बत्रा जी इस मूर्खता भरी लड़ाई को बड़े लम्बे समय् से लड़ रहें हैं। उन्होने अनेक बार एन॰सी॰ई॰आर॰टी॰ पर मुकदमें दायर किये, बहुत से कानूनी नोटिस भेजे जैसे द फ्रण्टलाइन के सम्पादक एन॰ राम को ‘हिन्दुत्व आंतकवादी’ शब्द प्रयोग करने के लिये, पर वे असफल ही रहे। उन्हें सफलता मिली गुजरात में जहां उनकी बकवास को पाठ्य पुस्तकों में शामिल किया गया। उसके बाद वेण्डी डॉनिजर की पुस्तक “द हिन्दूसः एन ऑल्टरनेट हिस्टरी” (हिन्दुः एक वैकल्पिक इतिहास) को उसके प्रकाशक पेंगुइन द्वारा न केवल वापस लेने पर बल्कि उसे नष्ट करने पर मजबूर किया। उसके बाद दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय में रामानुजम के तीन सौ प्रचलित रामायणों पर निबन्ध को प्रतिबन्धित कराने में सफल हुए। अब राष्टीय स्वयंसेवक संघ की ही सरकार है तो वे शेर बने बैठें हैं।

दूसरे महाशय जो जिनके बारें में बात की जा रही है, हैं वाई॰एस॰ राव। इन्हे आइ॰सी॰एच॰आर॰ का अध्यक्ष बनाया गया है। इनके इतिहास व ऐतिहसिक शोध के तरीको के बारे में बड़े ही मजेदार विचार हैं। कहने की जरूरत नहीं कि वे निश्चय ही वैज्ञानिक अथवा तार्किक नहीं है। वे जाति प्रथा और वर्ण व्यवस्था के प्रबल समर्थक हैं। उनका खयाल है कि इसमें कोई शोषण नहीं था। शुद्र के कान में वेद कि ॠचा जाने से उसके कान में पिघला सीसा डालना, सारे गन्दे काम को उन्हे देना व उन्हे अच्छे वस्त्र पहनने, घी खाने आदि अधिकार न होना कोई शोषण नहीं था। राम द्वारा शम्बूक की हत्या भी शोषण नहीं दर्शाते। वे तो कहते हैं कि सारी बुराइयां तो मुस्लिम शासन से शुरु हुयीं। वे तो शायद कंस को भी मुसलमान करार दें। कौरव कौन थे? क्या वे भी मुसलमान थे? वे और पाण्डव तो एक ही कुल के थे। फिर वर्णित बुराइयां का स्रोत क्या है? तब तक तो इस्लाम पैदा ही नहीं हुआ था। वे महाभारत और रामायण को इतिहास मानते हैं। और इसे मानने क उनका तर्क उनके बाकी विचारों जितना ही हास्यास्पद है। उनके अनुसार मनुष्य ने उस समय तक गल्पें और किस्से कहना सीखा ही नहीं था अतः ये तो प्रामाणिक ऐतिहासिक वर्णन ही है। वे तो ठोस सबूत और तार्किक प्रणाली को ही पश्चिमी प्रभाव कह कर नकार देतें हैं। उनके विचार से हमारे जैसे निरंतर सभ्यतायों में जनता के सामूहिक संस्मरण अधिक महत्वपूर्ण साक्ष्य होते हैं इतिहास की तह तक पहुँचने के लिये। इति सिद्धम। राम जन्म भूमि पर उनके विचार सहज ही समझे जा सकते हैं। वे पिछले साठ साल की गलतोयों को अपने कार्यकाल में सुधारना चाहते हैं। इसके लिये महाभारत के काल निर्धारण का प्रोजेक्ट आरम्भ भी कर दिया गया है।

उदाहरण की सूची बहुत लम्बी है, अतः कुछ मुख्य बिन्दु पर चर्चा करते हैं। ये सारे प्रयास निश्चित तौर पर नई फसल के दिमागों को भ्रष्ट करेगें। ऐसा एक प्रयास पिछली राजग सरकार द्वारा भी किया गया था। मुरली मनोहर जोशी ने जे॰एस॰ राजपूत को एन॰सी॰आर॰टी॰ पर थोप दिया था, एक मंत्र चिकित्सा का विभाग भी स्थापित किया था। पर वह सरकार अधिक परिवर्तन करने की हिम्मत नहीं जुटा पाई और केवल कुछ बहसें और कुछेक महीन परिवर्तन ही कर सकी थी। ऐसा भी नहीं है कि कांग्रेस या अन्य सरकारें बहुत प्रगतिशील रही थीं। इतिहास सदैव ही साम्प्रदायिक रहा है और शिक्षा अवैज्ञानिक। पर इसे कभी न्यायसंगत नहीं ठहराया गया, कम से कम औपचारिक रूप से। पर बहुमत सीट और तीस प्रतिशत वोट के “प्रचण्ड बहुमत” वाली यह सरकार न केवल इन मूर्खतापूर्ण बातों को सही ठहरा रही है बल्कि उसका महिमामण्डन भी कर रही है।

वे आलोचनात्मक सोच (क्रिटिकल थिंकिंग) के विकास पर ही प्रहार कर रहे हैं। वे चाहते हैं कि किसी बात को केवल इसलिए सही मान लिया जाय क्योंकि वह सदियों से ऐसी ही थी। उसके लिये प्रमाण, या किसी तर्क की आवश्यकता नहीं है। क्या ऐसी सोच से हम उम्दा वैज्ञानिक, अर्थशास्त्री, इतिहासकार या अन्य बुद्धिजीवी पैदा कर सकेंगे? वास्तव में वे ऐसा चहते भी नहीं हैं। वो तो लोगों को इस व्यवस्था के आज्ञाकारी सेवक बनाना चाहते हैं। अब चिकित्सा का शोध प्राचीन भारत के लोगो द्वारा पहुंची ‘ऊचाइयों’ को छूना रह जाएगा। आज के शोध और तर्कसंगत विमर्श अब पित्त, वायु और कफ में डूब कर रह जाएंगे। अनुभवसिद्ध (एम्पिरिकल) विधियां और इलाज अब वैज्ञानिक तारीको को पछाड़ आगे आयंगे। एक दिलचस्प बात यह है कि प्रसिद्ध योगगुरु बाबा रामदेव जब रामलीला मैदान में पुलिस के डर से अपनी भूख हड़ताल छोड़ सलवार कमीज पहन भागे थे तो अंग्रेजी (एलोपथिक) अस्पताल के आइ॰सी॰यू॰ में गये। यह स्पष्ट दिखाता है कि ये लोग खुद ही इन बातों में विश्वास नहीं करते। ये सिर्फ उपदेश मात्र हैं। ऐसा करने से वे लोगों को केवल पुरानी शान के खुमारी में डुबोए रखना चाहते हैं, और हमारा शोध व विकास बाहरी मुल्कों पर और अधिक आधारित हो जाये।

इसी प्रकार यह स्थापित करने का प्रयास है कि सभी कुछ तो वेदों में पहले से ही है। या बहुत सी रूढ़ियों और परम्परायों को (अ)वैज्ञानिक सिद्ध करना। ये एक तरह से वैज्ञानिक तरीकों की सत्यता को ही स्थापित करता है, क्योंकि गलत ही सही आखिर वे रूढ़ियों को ‘वैज्ञानिक’ सिद्ध कर रहे हैं। विज्ञान कभी भी शास्त्रों का सहारा नहीं लेता। पर इससे विकास ही बाधित हो जाएगा, क्योंकि अब तो यह सिद्ध किया जा रहा है कि इसके बाहर कुछ है ही नहीं, बस इन्हीं धर्म ग्रंथो को पढ़े। आयुर्वेद और वेदों को पढ़ने के आलवा कुछ ज्ञान है ही नहीं। यहीं सभी कुछ है। अब तो शायद हमें विज्ञान, प्राद्यौगिकि, चिकित्सा शास्त्र आदि सभी पढ़ाना व शोध बन्द कर देने चाहियें।

यह नहीं कहा जा रह है कि पहले कुछ उप्लब्धियां ही नहीं थी। पर उतने प्राचीन भारत में तो नहीं। भारतीयो ने गणित और खगोलशास्त्र में बेहतरीन काम किया था। आर्यभट्ट ने बहुत सी खोजें की थी, पर वे वैदिक काल के नहीं थे। उन्होनें तो बहुत सी स्थापित धारणाओं का खण्डन किया था। उनकी तत्कालीन धर्माचार्यों से बहस प्रसिद्ध है जब उन्होने धोषणा की कि पृथ्वी शून्य में स्थित है न कि नन्दी के सींगों पर। इसी प्रकार भास्कराचार्य ने भी बहुत से गणित के सूत्र प्रतिपादित किए पर वो भी बाद के ही थे। उनकी उपलब्धियों को इन प्राचीन ग्रंथों से नहीं जोड़ा जा सकता और उनकी सत्य्ता से मिथको को प्रामाणिक नहीं बनाया जा सकता। इसके अलावा भारत अकेला नहीं था। बहुत सी पूर्वी सभ्यतयों में महान विचारक थे और उनका परस्पर विमर्श होता था। अतः किसी एक के सिर सेहरा बांधना उचित नहीं। उदाहरण के लिये शून्य की अवधारणा पर बहस है कि यह भारतीय है या बेबीलोनयाई।

वो हमारे प्रतीकों को भी बदल देना चाहते हैं। वे या तो प्रचलित प्रतीकों को बदल रहे हैं या उन्हे अंगीकार कर रहे हैं। आचानक से सरदार पटेल, गांधी या भगत सिंह पर उमड़ा प्रेम दर असल यही दर्शाता है। इसके पीछे एक तो कारण है कि राष्टीय स्वयंसेवक संघ के अपने कोई प्रतीक नहीं हैं जो देश की जनता के जहन में हों। केवल गोलवालकर और हेड्गवार आदि के नाम पर सड़क या भवनों के नाम रखने से कुछ हासिल नहीं होता। अंग्रेजों के खिलाफ लड़ने वाले एक भी संघी का नाम वे नहीं बता सकते। ले दे कर एक सावरकर हैं पर उनकी भी अंग्रेजी सरकार से माफी मांगने के बाद मूल्य नहीं रहा। असलियत तो यह भी है कि ये लोग अंग्रजी राज को विदेशी मानते ही नहीं, वो तो इसे मुस्लिम राज से गुलामी मानते हैं और इस संदर्भ में तो अंग्रेजो की प्रशंसा करते हैं कि उन्होने मुस्लिम राज को खत्म किया। उनका सबसे लोकप्रिय चेहरा जो शायद भारतरत्न से भी नवाजा जाये है अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी है और इनका 1942 के आन्दोलन में पुलिसिया गवाह होने का दागदार इतिहास है। सरदार पटेल इसलिये क्योंकि उनके विचार राष्टीय स्वयंसेवक संघ के करीब थे। वे कांग्रेसी प्रतीक गांधी और नेहरु को भी चुरा रहे हैं। सबसे घटिया है भगत सिंह को चुराना। नरेन्द्र मोदी द्वारा भगत सिंह की जेल डायरी का विमोचन (जारी करना) भगत सिंह को दुबारा फांसी देने जैसा था। भगत सिंह को जाने बिना, पढ़े बिना वे उसे नये मूल्य देना चाहते हैं। वे इस बात को भूल जाते हैं या जानबूझ कर छिपा देते हैं कि भगत सिंह हिन्दू महा सभा या राष्टीय स्वयंसेवक संघ से नहीं जुड़े थे। न केवल नहीं जुड़े थे बल्कि वे ऐसे विचारों के विरोधी थे। उनकी लाला लाजपत राय से इसी प्रकार के मुद्दो पर तीखी बहस सर्वविदित है और उपलब्ध है। पर ये लोग भगत सिंह को केवल एक अंग्रेजी राज के खिलाफ लड़ने वाला महानायक के रूप में रख उसकी असली बातों को पीछे धकेलना चाहतें हैं। वे चालाकी से न केवल उसके असली मूल्यों को भुलाना चालते हैं. बल्कि धीरे धीरे उसके साथ अपने मूल्य और विचार जोड़ना चाहते हैं।

जहां वे विज्ञान को रूढ़िवाद से तब्दील करने की फिराक में हैं वहीं वे तकनीक/प्राद्यौगिकि पर बड़ी बड़ी बातें कर रहे हैं। मोदी जी का डिजिटल इण्डिया का विचार, स्मार्ट सिटी, बुलेट ट्रेन, कश्मीर में एन्ड्रॉयड वन की बातें इसी का उदाहरण हैं। मोदी के पूर्व लोगों ने भी हाइड्रौलिक लिफ्ट लगी टोयोटा गाड़ियों को रथ कह कर पूरे देश में सम्प्रदायिक उन्माद और नफरत फैलाने के लिए इस्तेमाल किया। विज्ञान और वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोण को खत्म करने में उनके कई मकसद हैं। एक तो वे आर्य श्रेष्ठता को स्थापित करना चाहते हैं। वे ये सिद्ध करना चाहते हैं कि विदेशी मूल का कुछ भी ठीक नहीं है, केवल जो भारतीय है वह ही न केवल ठीक है बल्कि सर्वश्रेष्ठ भी है। इसी कारण से वे आर्य आक्रमण के सिद्धांत का इतना पुरजोर विरोध करते हैं। कयोकिं यदि आर्य और वैदिक संस्कृति बाहर से आई है तो बाहरी चीजें भी सही हो सकती हैं जो कि वो मानना नहीं चाहते। इसी से वे अन्य धर्मों के प्रति घृणा फैलाने का आधार चाहते हैं।

वे तर्कशीलता को कुन्द करना चाहते हैं। लोगो को केवल धर्मशास्त्रों तक सीमित रखना, कल्पनायों को अंतिम सत्य मानना, और उसी तथाकथित प्राचीन गौरव को हासिल करने तक ही सोचेने देना चाहते हैं। शोध की दिशा इन कपोल कल्पनओं को स्थापित करना ही रह जाएगा। अभी तक हम इतिहास की गलत बेतुकी व्याख्या की आलोचना कर सकते हैं पर जब वाई॰एस॰  राव जैसे लोग कमान संभालेगें तो अविवेक व तर्कहीनता ही निष्कर्ष तक पहुंचने का रास्ता होगा तो इस बकवास को चुनौती देने की क्षमता भी नहीं रहेगी।

वैज्ञानिक तरीको को खत्म कर विज्ञान के विकास, विषेशकर बेसिक विज्ञान के विकास को कुंद करना चाहते हैं। वो ये भूल जाते हैं कि ये बेसिक विज्ञान ही है जिसके आधार पर भविष्य में तकनीक बनती है। अतः तकनीकी विकास भी रुक जाएगा और हमारी विदेश पर निर्भरता और बढ़ जाएगी। पर वे इस निर्भरता के खिलाफ तो हैं ही नहीं। केवल विज्ञान ही नहीं वे आलोचनात्मक सोच को ही समाप्त कर वे पूरी शिक्षा प्रणाली को ही कुछ कौशल (स्किल) विकास तक ही सीमित करना चाहते हैं जो बहूराष्ट्रीय कम्पनियों के लिये कुशल मजदूर पैदा कर सके। ये भी सुनिश्चित हो जाएगा कि अब अच्छे अर्थशास्त्री, शिक्षाविद, दार्शनिक, कवि, विचारक आदि नहीं होंगे जो समाज का नेत्तृव या मार्गदर्शन कर सकें, और अच्छे वैज्ञानिक तो होंगे ही नहीं।

इससे पाकिस्तान में जनरल जिया उल हक द्वारा सत्ता संभालने के बाद की घाटनओं की याद आ जाती है जब वैज्ञानिकों को जिन्नात आदि पर अनुसंधान करने पर लगा दिया गया। जाने जाने माने पाकिस्तानी वैज्ञानिक परवेज हूदभाई ने कहा “परम्परागत उलेमा समस्या तो हैं, पर सबसे बड़ी नहीं; सबसे बड़ी समस्या तो अतिवादी इस्लाम है, एक उग्र इस्लाम जो धार्मिक दायरे से बाहर आकर राष्ट्रीय और अंतर्राष्ट्रीय राज्नीति में घुस जाता है। जब भी और धार्मिक कठमुल्लापन वर्चस्वकारी होता है, अंधी श्रद्धा वस्तुनिष्ठ और तार्किक सोच पर छा जाती है। अगर ये ताकते समाज पर नियंत्रण करती हैं तो ये आलोचनात्मक सोच, वैज्ञानिक जिज्ञासा पर रोक लगाती हैं जो जिज्ञासा आधारित ज्ञानार्जन पर रोक लगाता है।“

हम ऐसा भी नहीं कह रहे कि अब से पूर्व व्यवस्था बहुत वैज्ञानिक या तार्किक थी। शुरु से ही सरकारें लोगो में बहुत स्वतंत्र सोच विकास नहीं करना चाहती थी। पर यह इतना खुले आम नहीं था। संविधान में भी लिखा है कि हमें वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोण विकसित करना चाहिए, जिसका मतलब है कि कम से कम सिद्धांत में सरकार वैज्ञानिक सोच के विरोध में नहीं थी। इस लिए इसका अनुसरण किया जा सकता था और इसकी कुछ मान्यता भी थी। अब से पहले भी सभी औपचारिक समरोहो में सरस्वती पूजा, नारियल फोड़ना होता था। वैज्ञानिक प्रोकेक्ट भी अछूते नहीं थे। यहां तक कि चन्द्रयान और मंगलयान से पहले भी नारियल फोड़ा गया। पर अब ये और तेज, नंगा है और इसे न्यायसंगत ठहराया जा रहा है। तर्कहीनता और कल्पनायें अब दिग्दर्शक होगीं। बहुत से आलोचक जिसमें माकपा का मुखपत्र ‘पीपल्स डेमोक्रेसी” शामिल है, नेहरु युग के गुण्गान करता है। वह कोई बहुत स्वर्णिम काल नहीं था। उसमें भी इतिहास में साम्प्रदायिक पुट था और कांग्रेसी नेतायों की भूमिका को बढ़ा चढ़ा कर रखा गया था। शिक्षा प्रणाली भी वैज्ञानिक नहीं थी, पर चाहने वाले कुछ कर सकते थे। उनकी आर्थिक नीतियां भी जन पक्षीय नहीं था। असल में तो वर्तमान नीतियां उन्ही का अगामी पक्ष है। साम्रज्यवाद के गहराते संकट ने इन पीछे धकेलने वाली नीतियों को जरूरी बना दिया है। यह महज संयोग ही नहीं है कि राष्टीय स्वयंसेवक संघ को आगे बढ़ने दिया जा रहा है।

वे चाहते हैं कि लोग केवल रामयण, महाभारत और गीता पढ़ते रहें और सरकार निर्बाध लूट जारी रखे। वे बेशर्मी से पूजींपतियों के इशारों पर नाच रहें है, साम्राज्यवादी आकाओं के आगे नत मस्तक हैं, उन्हे देश के सस्ते श्रम और प्राकृतिक संसाधन को लूटने आमत्रित कर रहे हैं। वो चहते हैं कि लोग धर्मशास्त्रों को पढ़ते रहें, प्राचीन ‘गौरव’ के गुणगान करते रहें, अंधराष्ट्रवाद के नशे में चूर रहे और इस लूट को न देखें। उनके लिये देशभक्ति केवल गीता, सरस्वती पूजा आदि के लिये लड़ने, तर्क बुद्धि पर हमला करने, अल्पसंख्यकों पर हमला करने तक ही सीमित है। अब लोग इसे ही सीखेंगे और समझेंगे। और वो विदेशी पूंजी के खिलाफ तो हैं ही नहीं ( सारे विकास कार्यक्रम एफ॰डी॰आई॰ से ही होंगे), विदेशी पूंजी (बहुराष्ट्रीय कम्पनी, साम्रज्यवादी पूंजी और संस्थान) के आगे घुटने टेके हैं। प्रधान मंत्री तो देश देश कम्पनियों को शोषण के लिये आमंत्रित करते फिर रहे हैं। इन विदेशी (बुलेट ट्रेन, एन्ड्रोयड वन आदि सहित) चीजो से उन्हे आपत्ति नहीं है। इन बहुराष्ट्रीय कम्पनियों द्वारा देश की जनता (जिसका बहुमत हिंदु है) को लूटे जाने और अधिक बदहाली में धकेले जाने में उनके राष्ट्रवाद को चोट नहीं पहुंचती। ये ही वो लोग हैं जो माइकल जैक्सन के जूते चाटते हैं और गुलाम अली का विरोध करते हैं। उनके नारे जनता को मुर्ख बनाने के लिये और काम साम्राज्यवाद और इसके दलालों की सेवा करना है।

सबसे अधिक दुखद बात तो वैज्ञानिक व अकादमिक समाज की चुप्पी है। एकाध को छोड़ कर कोई आवाज बुलंद नहीं कर रहा। वे या तो इस तथाकथित मोदी लहर में बह गये हैं या अपने व्यक्तिगत केरियर के चलते बोलने से डरतें हैं। यह चुप्पी बेहद खतरनाक है। क्योंकि इससे वे शायद अपने केरियर तो बचा लें पर भावी पीढ़ी और देश के भविष्य को रसातल में डल देंगें। यदा कदा कुछ आवाजे हैं पर इसके खिलाफ मजबूत आंदोलन नहीं है जो आज के समय की जरूरत है।

One Step Backwards: 100 Miles Backwards

Inauguration of Modi’s chum’s Reliance hospital in Mumbai was done by none other than Prime Minister himself. While delivering his speech he took out a leaf from the book of Dinanath Batra and started preaching. According to him this book contained references to history of ancient India, and it tells about the great advancements of medical sciences that was reached by those people. Let us quote him “Hum Ganeshji ki pooja karte hain. Koi to plastic surgeon hoga us zamaane mein jisne manushya ke shareer par haathi ka sar rakh karke plastic surgery ka prarambh kiya hoga.”  & “Medical  science ki duniya mein hum garv kar sakte hain ki hamara desh kisi samay mein kya tha. Mahabharat mein Karna ki katha, hum sab Karna ke vishay mein Mahabharat mein padhte hain. Lekin kabhi hum thoda sa aur sochna shuru karen to dhyaan mein aayega ki Mahabharat ka kehna hai ki Karna maa ki god se paida nahi hua tha. Iska matlab ye hua ki us samay genetic science maujood tha.Tabhi to Karna, maa ki god ke bina, uska janma hua hoga.”

These utterances were not in isolation but in continuation of the attempts of this government to change the definitions and perspective of history, science, symbols and reasoning. This was a glimpse of the efforts being made by this government to fulfill the long term agenda of RSS i.e. to establish that ‘Hindu’ or Aryans were most superior and this has to be restored. And this is done not by raising the level of competence but by one intimidating others and terrorizing them to either succumb or flea and secondly by corrupting and changing the mindset. It is the second aspect which is main subject we shall deal here.

There is an all-round attack to making myths history and history myth, making science looking obscure and obscurantism as science, changing either the symbols or ascribing new values to them. This is a very dangerous practice. Dangerous because it is going to corrupt the minds of young ones, dangerous because it will curb the reasoning and scientific temper (which is already not prevalent), dangerous because it will change the meaning and content and thus interpretation of history, dangerous because it will establish treacherous people as national heroes and will throw real heroes to dustbin.

The rise of one Mr. Dinanath Batra to the level of a person advising contents of education, rise of Mr. YS Rao as the chief of Indian Council of Historical Research is not accidental. Later claimed not to be a member of RSS, but these claims do not hide the obvious. Batra a former headmaster of a school at Dera Bassi (border town in Punjab) and then Haryana, has a long track record of pushing his views into system. He has been main functionary of RSS education wing Vidya Bharati. When one sees his views, they are not only shocking but outright derogatory to other civilizations, and many of them are so imprudent that one fails to find words to react. His texts are already being taught in Gujarat and they bears a foreword from Then Chief Minister of Gujarat Narendra Modi. His book makes references to ancient Hindu texts and cites the incidents, events etc. as true and then goes on interpreting the fantasy as proven fact.

There are many examples. Let us have a look at a few of them. He cites that royal couple were blesses with children after they worshiped cows, therefore taking care and respecting cows can  be cure for infertility. As there is reference to Lord Ram flying an aircraft called Pushpak Vimana in Ramayana, it is enough proof that ancient Indians were well versed in aeronautics. There is references to two kinds of raths (chariots) - ashva raths and anashva raths. Former was pulled by horses and later had to be a motor car. How else can it move without horses! He does not bother to ponder about the fuel that might be needed to propel such ‘machines’. Fossil fuel was not available at that time and only inflammable thing that was commonly used was ghee. He does not even tell as to why there is no description of details of their designs in any of the texts. Why, we failed to find any remains of those anywhere.  Harishankar Parsai, a noted Hindi satirist once commented that good that they have made airplane, but why not bicycle? Mr. Batra forgets the fact that man has been fantasizing and it continued till it actually made flying devices. And this was not done just in India or Hindus. But all over the world. Leonardo da Vinci as late as …….. attempted to give real colors to this fantasy by making a flying machine and failed miserably. But it was a scientific effort. There is no such report of such attempts earlier. 

Citing again from Mahabharata he tells that there must have been a well-developed stem cell research. There are references of births outside mother’s womb.  Like birth of Kauravas and that of Karna. Lord Shiva implanted head of an elephant onto Ganesh. This is enough prove that plastic surgery existed at that time. And many more. There are gods in Greek mythology having body of horse and man, so should not we infer that such advancements were existent even there? Interestingly, they had plastic surgery but not hip bone repair/replacement surgery otherwise poor Duryodhana would not had to die. They had television as ‘evidenced’ by Sanjay incidence but probably was exclusive, otherwise Guru Dronacharya could see the reality of which Ashwathama died. Pushpak existed but still a bridge was required to go to Lanka. Why not air attacks. In fact these planes must have been more advanced than any of them we see today as they did not even needed a run way, had no propellers or jet propulsion mechanism.

This is one aspect. Second is he denounces anything foreign. He even goes on ridiculing Africans referring with ‘n’ word (use of ‘negro’ is banned as it is associated with slavery and subjugation) and telling they speak like sound of buffalo. He refers to it many times and derogates them.  He tells us that god was making chapattis, first one could not be cooked properly and Britons originated from there. Second one was burnt and Africans originated from there. Third one was properly cooked and Indians came from it.

He like others of his clan also wants to restore Akhand Bharat encompassing Myanmar, Tibet, and Afghanistan. Only they know at which time in history there was such a huge land under one rule called Bharata.

He had been a sort of crusader for his cause. He was instrumental in making Penguin to pulp its publication “The Hindus:  An Alternative History” by Wendy Doniger, getting Ramanunjan’s book on comprehensive account on different Ramayana prevalent from Delhi University. He had been filing law suits against NCERT, giving legal notices like he gave to The Frontline Editor N Ram for using term ‘Hindutva Terrorism’, albeit not very successful. It is Gujarat where he started facing success and then banning or pulping the books. And now he is far too embolden.

Other gentleman in discussion is YS Rao. He has been appointed as chairman ICHR. He has very amusing views on history and methods of historical research. Needless to say that they are not at all scientific or rational. He is a firm believer of Caste system and thinks it has played a great role in olden days and has nothing to do with exploitation. He attribute bad things due to Muslim rule in north India. He also believe Ramayana and Mahabharata to be work of history and started a project to establish its date. His logic for this is as amusing as his other logics are. He says that man has not started writing fiction by then. So it cannot be fictional. He challenges method of basing on material evidences and rationale as western influence. Collective memory of people is more important in case of continuing civilization like ours is one of his method to establish historical truth. No prizes for guessing his views on Babri Masjid and Ram Janmbhumi. He wishes to correct the wrongs of 60 years during his tenure as ICHR Chief.

List is very long. Let us make a few points. These are obviously to corrupt the minds of people particularly of young ones. Such attempts were also made during previous NDA government. MM Joshi pushed JS Rajput to NCERT and even started a department of Mantrik Healing. But that government was not this bold and could only debate and made some subtle changes. It is also not that Congress or other government has very progressive perspective. History had been communal and education unscientific. But that was not justified. This government embolden by majority seats is not only justifying this also glorifying these absurdities.

They are attacking the development of ability to think critically. Rather one must assume something to be true as it has been believed to be so for years. Can we expect to produce any good scientists, economists, historians or other academicians with such training? In fact they do not want to. They just want people be obedient servants of the system. Now medical science will be directed towards achieving the ‘heights’ of ancient India. Disregarding current research, a rational approach, one will be submersed in vayu, kaff and pitta. The empirical observations and remedies will take precedence over scientific methods. Interestingly, when the yoga guru Ramdev ran disguised in feminine attire after hunger strike, he went to ICU of allopathic hospital. It clearly shows that what they preach is not what they believe. By doing this, people will remain intoxicated with glory of past, while our entire research and development will be become further and totally dependent on outside world.

Likewise, there is a tendency of saying everything was there already in Vedas. Or giving (none) scientific justifications to various customs and traditions. This on hand establish the superiority of scientific methods as that is what is used (though erroneously) to justify (science never uses religious texts or customs to justify its claims). This again is going to jeopardize the development as all we need to do is read these texts properly and there is nothing beyond it. These facts will point to fact that all we need do is read and teach Ayurveda and Vedas. Everything is there. One should stop schools of medicine, science and technology and thus save lots of money and time in rediscovering!

All this does not mean that there was no achievements in past. But definitely not that far away in history. Indians have good work in mathematics and astronomy. Now they are even mixing all this. True, Aryabhata had made many observations, but he was not of Vedic era. In fact he contradicts many ancient believes. There is famous debate with then religious leaders and him when he declared that earth is in space (shunya) and not held on horns of Nandi. Bhaskara who gave many mathematical concepts was also not of that era. Their achievements cannot be clubbed with these epics and then used to testify myths. Secondly, India was not alone. Many eastern counties had thinkers of great competence and there had been interaction among them. So many of these achievements were common and it is difficult to ascribe to someone particular. Like concept of zero- Whether it was Babylonia or India has always been a debate.

A little on symbols too. They are trying to change or adopt the symbols of nation. Like, for example – sudden love for Sardar Patel, Gandhi, and Bhagat Singh etc. The reasons are simple. One- RSS does not have any figure which is in consciousness of people of this country. Simply by naming roads and buildings after Golwalakars and hedgawars does not help. They cannot name a single name who has fought against British. Only name is Savarkar. But he too after apologizing has lost his value. (This is also a fact that they do not consider British Raj as foreign rule. They date it back to 700 years back when Muslim rulers ruled India, and hail British for removing them. But the common man in country cannot take this- therefore need of new heroes). Their most popular face and possible nominee for Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee has a dubious history of being police witness during 1942 uprising. Sardar Patel as his views were closer to RSS. They are stealing congress symbols like Gandhi and Nehru. Worst is stealing Bhagat Singh. Releasing his Jail Notebook by Modi was like hanging him again. Without even knowing or reading Bhagat Singh, assigning him new values. This is disregarding the fact that he not only did not chose to join Hindu Maha Sabha or RSS but opposed such views. His debates with Lala Lajpat Rai etc. are well documented. But they will simply demean him and will make him some super hero who only fought against British raj they are doing cleverly, not only without giving the true views of person, but gradually adopting him and ascribing him their values.  

While they after reducing science to obscurantism, they are talking big of technology. Modi’s idea of digital India, talking of AndroidOne in Kashmir, smart city, bullet trains etc. are just a few examples of the same. Even his predecessors rode hi-tech hydraulic lift enabled Toyota vehicles and called them Raths, and used them to spread communal hatred.  How do we perceive connection in the two? By reducing science no nonsense they are achieving a few things. One, of course they are trying to prove the concept of Aryan superiority. It is so much dear to them. They want to prove that anything of foreign origin is wrong and whatever was Indian is not just right but greatest. Nothing of any merit could have been developed outside. That is why they are most vehement to oppose the historical theories of Aryan invasion, for if invasion is historical truth then Aryan and Vedic culture has come from outside and thus things from outside can be good. By doing this they also find a way to justify hatred for other religions.

They also curb the critical and rational thinking. By making people to believe in whatever has been in the scriptures as truth, by believing fantasies to be fact, and then raising to those heights. Research will be directed towards finding out or establishing the fictitious work. Up to now we have been able to criticize the nonsense irrational interpretation of history. But with the likes of YS Rao at the helm, the methods of arriving at conclusions too is going to be irrationality. Thus the ability to challenge will be curbed and all nonsense will go unchallenged.

By doing away with scientific methods, they will curb the development of science particularly that of basic science. Without bothering that it is basic science which can be the basis of any technological development later. Thus, even technological development too will be hampered and our dependence will continue to increase. As it is they are not against this dependence. Not just science but doing away with critical thinking and changing entire education to some skill development programme to produce skilled man power to cater the demands and needs of MNCs will also ensure that we do not have social leaders. We will not have intellectual leaders capable of independent thinking. There will not be good economists, educationists, philosophers, poets, thinkers who could guide and lead society and of course will not have good scientists.

This reminds one of what happened in Pakistan after General Zia ul Haq took over and forced scientific research to be Islamic research. Scientists started researching Jins (genie) and such concepts. Noted Pakistani nuclear physicist Pervez Hoodbhoy observed - “The traditional ulema are indeed a problem, but they are not the biggest one; the biggest problem is Islamism, a radical and often militant interpretation of Islam that spills over from the theological domain into national and international politics. Whenever and wherever religious fundamentalism dominates, blind faith clouds objective and rational thinking. If such forces take hold in a society, they create a mindset unfavourable for critical inquiry, including scientific inquiry, with its need to question received wisdom.”*[i]

It is not being asserted that system prior to them was very scientific and rational.  Governments, right from the beginning were not interested in people being too capable of thinking. But it was not so overt. Vide provision of constitution, which says that scientific temper should be developed, means at least on theory, government was not in opposition to scientific temper. So there was some following of this and at least people trying to do so had some acceptability. Even earlier we had Sarasvati pujas, breaking of coconut etc. before every official function, inauguration, so much so that many scientific projects (including Mangalyan and Chandrayan) were preceded with coconut breaking. But now it is brazen, intense and comes with justification. Irrationality and figment of fictions are going to be the order. Many of the critics including an article in organ of CPM “People’s Democracy” have asserted to go back to Nehruvian era. That era was not golden era. History had a communal flavor and role of Congress leaders was over glorified. Education system was not scientific and pro-people. Yes, there was some scope for people willing. Nor were his economic policies were pro people. In fact current policies are a continuation of the same. But as there is greater crisis of imperialism, need for such retrograde policies are need of the hour. It is not accidental that RSS is being allowed to pursue this.

They want to keep people busy in reading Ramayana, Mahabharata etc. and at the same time government increase the plunder of people. Shamelessly succumbing to the dictates of capitalists and bowing down to imperialists powers, inviting them to exploit our cheap labour and natural resources. And people should remain busy in reading scriptures, taking pride in ‘glory’ of the past and remain drunk with chauvinism will not look at this. For them patriotism will be fighting for Gita, Sarasawati Puja, attacking critics of irrationality, attacking minorities etc. that is what they will learn and imbibe. They are not averse to foreign capital (all development programs are to be done by FDI), kowtowing to foreign (MNCs, imperials powers and institutions) finance. In fact the PM himself is going around inviting companies to come and exploit. Their national pride is not hurt in being dependent on these things (including Bullet train, AndriodeOne) of foreign origin. They will be happy in getting the country looted by these MNCs and putting the large majority of people (majority of which are Hindus) being pushed to further desolation. They are the same brand who lick Michael Jackson while oppose Ghulam Ali. Their rhetoric are for public consumption and action for serving imperialism and its lackeys.

Glaring is the silence of scientific community and academicia in general. With the exception of one or two, no one from scientific fraternity has raised any voice. They seem to be either carried away with so called Modi wave or thinking of individual career, too scared to speak. This silence will be very dangerous, for they may save their career but will spoil future generations and future of country. There are voices here and there but no powerful striving to challenge the same. This is the need of the hour.
